Every year billions of PET bottles are collected across Europe, before being compressed into bales and sent to recycling plants. The plastic bottles are sorted by the type of plastic they're made from. The material that we use is made from clear PET bottles. The mix of multiple types of plastics would contaminate the PET recycling process. After sorting, the bottles are compressed and sent to a recycling facility.
Compressed bottles are cleaned to remove any food or liquid. Decontamination is the next step that cleans waste from any chemical residue. At this step, the mechanical properties of the recycled materials are increased up to the values of virgin polymers. Washed bottles are then shredded into flakes.
The final stage of plastic recycling is melting and extrusion. Extrusion is the process of melting down plastic bottles and forcing this through an extruder. The plastic that comes out of the extruder is cut into small particles to form granulation.
WHY rPET
rPET-based yarn contributes to a lower carbon footprint of your products, making them more sustainable and environmentally friendly compared to virgin yarns used in traditional straps of gymnastic rings.
The granulates are shoved through hot pipes and melted into a thick liquid. That liquid flows through the dye plate holes to form filaments with more than five times finer structure than a human hair. Once the filaments pool and harden, these are sent over rollers with air entangling the filaments to create a floss-like yarn. The machine spools the yarn and then pulls it over hot metal rollers to stretch it and realign the polyester molecules. In short, spinning is turning the granulate into durable rPET industrial yarn. The resulting yarn is ready to be woven into our high-tenacity straps.
Marmati strapping is made from high-tenacity rPET yarns which are woven together on looms. Weaving is the process of intersecting the longitudinal threads with the transverse threads. Once the high-tenacity strap is woven it goes through a dying and drying process. The dye process adds colour and custom labelling to a colourless woven strap. Our woven edition is not coloured. Patterns are made just by the advanced technique of weaving, also called the Jacquart method. We finish this stage by high-tenacity sewing quick-release buckles and rubber labels to the strap.
Marmati gym rings are made of sustainably sourced birch plywood from the baltic region of China. It is made from only top-quality birch veneers laminated together with no filler wood. All the used wood comes from certified or controlled forests. Marmati ensures responsible forest management through the FSC® (A000532) forest certification processes of our manufacturing partners in China.
We use recycled paper for boxing our products and also for any additional product inserts. Production of recycled paper uses less energy, and water and generates lower carbon emissions than non-recycled paper production while reducing landfill waste. Paper can be recycled up to 5 times in a row.
